Reports from the county’s Growth Management Department show residential and commercial permits both rose by the double digits over the year in the unincorporated area, outside of city limits. The news of continued growth comes days after Lee County reported similar increases in construction activity.

More than 90 commercial buildings, up from 78 in 2014, for a 27 percent increase.

Commercial permit values increased the most last year, swelling by 38 percent to $235 million, up from $170 million in 2014, according to the county’s reports.

“There is an old saying that commercial chases rooftops,” French said.

The total value of all new home and new commercial construction permits in the unincorporated area came in at more than $1 billion last year. “This is only vertical construction,” French pointed out, which means it doesn’t include builders investments in such infrastructure as roads and utilities.
